Pompeii of Nicaragua

The Ruins of León Viejo, founded in 1524 by Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernández de Córdoba, are among the oldest colonial settlements in the Americas. Located at the foot of Momotombo Volcano, the city was abandoned in 1610 after repeated eruptions and pirate threats. Forgotten for centuries, it was rediscovered and excavated in the 20th century. Now a Unesco World Heritage Site, it reveals colonial churches, houses, and city planning  offering a look into Nicaragua’s early Spanish and indigenous history.
