For most countries a visa is not needed. Please note that although a visa is not required, holders of British, US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand, and most EU passports are required to pay US$10 for a tourist card on arrival.
There’s good access to ATMs in nearly all towns and cities. But be aware that we go to locations where there is not ATM. We will tell you in advance when we go to a place where there is no ATM so you can bring enough cash.
Drinking tap water in Nicaragua isn’t recommended for first time travellers. The locals all drink the tap water and we do too. Our advise is to fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. It’s also advisable to avoid ice in drinks.
Recommended vaccinations for Nicaragua include hepatitis a, tetanus, rabies, and typhoid. You’ll also need to show proof of a yellow fever vaccination if you’ve travelled from somewhere with a risk of yellow fever transmission.
Nicaragua has a tipping culture, especially in restaurants and bars. In some places a 10% tip is added to the bill.
There are several times during the trip where there is an opportunity to tip the local guides or drivers we use. Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from USD $5-10 USD depending on the quality and length of the service.
