Itinerary full camping tour Indio Maiz

We begin by picking you up in León, Managua, or Granada, then head through Juigalpa for breakfast. From there, we continue to San Carlos and take local transport to El Castillo. After lunch, we visit the historic fortress and explore the village before resting for the night. The next morning, we canoe to the reserve entrance, hike into the jungle, and reach a small island to camp. At night, we search for crocodiles. The third night we camp deeper in the reserve to explore further. The final day we return to El Castillo and prepare to head back.

The first night is spent in a cozy, locally-owned hotel in the charming riverside town of El Castillo. The second night we spend in a small island in the middle of the river  in the heart of Indio Maíz Reserve. You can choose between sleeping in a tent or a hammock, both are provided and set up for you in a safe, designated area surrounded by the jungle. The third night we spend in a camping place in the jungle.

The drive from, Granada to San Carlos takes approximately 4 hours, depending on road and weather conditions. We’ll make stops along the way to eat, rest, and explore a bit of Juigalpa.

Indio Maíz is one of the most biodiverse areas in Central America. You might see monkeys, toucans, caimans, crocodiles, dart frogs, sloths, and a wide variety of birds and butterflies. While wildlife sightings can’t be guaranteed, the chances are very high , especially during our early morning and evening walks.
