Start your journey with a city tour through Matagalpa’s lively streets. Wander through colorful markets, chat with friendly locals, and grab a coffee in one of the cozy cafés that fill the air with that unmistakable aroma of roasted beans. Visit the San Pedro Cathedral, a white colonial beauty in the heart of town, and end your walk at El Calvario viewpoint where the entire city stretches below you, framed by misty hills. 2. Selva Negra
Just a short drive from the city, Selva Negra feels like stepping into another world. This eco-lodge and working coffee farm sits deep in a lush cloud forest, where the air hums with life and everything smells green. One of Matagalpa’s most magical spots is Cascada Blanca, a beautifull waterfall tucked into the green hills. You can swim in the cool pool beneath it, walk behind the curtain of water, or simply sit on the rocks and let the sound wash over you. For us, it’s the perfect spot to recharge surrounded by jungle, mist, and peace. Bring your swimsuit, towel, and sense of wonder.

In town, the Coffee Museum is a must for understanding Matagalpa’s soul. You’ll find vintage tools, historical photos, explanations of processing methods, and context for how coffee shaped the region economically and socially. For us, walking through those exhibits deepened our appreciation for every plantation visit we did later.

Trails wind through lush forest to the Cruz de la Paz (Cross of Peace) at the summit a viewpoint that rewards you with sweeping views of Matagalpa and the surrounding mountains. We hiked early morning, as mist cleared and birds came alive. For nature lovers, Apante is a must-visit embrace of highland wilderness.
11. El Arenal Reserve
A bit wilder and less visited is the El Arenal Reserve. Here, you can hike through dense forests, spot exotic birds, and listen to the sounds of untouched nature. It’s an ideal spot for those who want to get off the beaten path and connect deeply with the land. We spent a half day there, following trails past coffee farms and into lush greenery, listening to water trickle, insects hum, and leaves whisper. It’s less traveled but no less rewarding.
12. Black pottery workshop
One of our favorite cultural stops was visiting a black pottery workshop. Local artisans shaped dark clay, polished it, and fired it in smoky kilns producing pots, bowls, sculptures with a deep black sheen. The artisans use age-old techniques passed down through generations. Watching them shape and polish each piece is amazing to watch and you can even try your hand at making your own.
