You can hike through cloud forests one day, roll your own cigar the next, and sip freshly brewed coffee straight from the source. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and discover what real Nicaragua feels like. For us, it’s one of those places that quietly steals your heart.
Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, tracing the origins of world-class coffee, or uncovering local art and history Matagalpa is full of surprises. Here are our top things to do in and around this beautiful mountain town.

1. The Original Free Walking Tour
Start your journey with a city tour through Matagalpa’s lively streets. Wander through colorful markets, chat with friendly locals, and grab a coffee in one of the cozy cafés that fill the air with that unmistakable aroma of roasted beans. Visit the San Pedro Cathedral, a white colonial beauty in the heart of town, and end your walk at El Calvario viewpoint where the entire city stretches below you, framed by misty hills. It’s the best way to fall in love with Matagalpa’s charm.
2. Selva Negra
Just a short drive from the city, Selva Negra feels like stepping into another world. This eco-lodge and working coffee farm sits deep in a lush cloud forest, where the air hums with life and everything smells green. Join a farm tour to learn about sustainable agriculture and the wildlife that thrives here. Stroll past coffee plants, mountain streams, and orchids clinging to mossy trees it’s nature and culture beautifully intertwined. This place is nature + coffee + calm. It’s perfect when you want to feel altitude, forest, and fresh air all in one deep inhale.

3. Take a coffee tour
Matagalpa lives and breathes coffee. It is the coffee capital of Nicaragua, and no visit is complete without a coffee tour. Visit local plantations to see how those rich Nicaraguan beans are grown, harvested, and roasted. On a guided coffee tour, you’ll follow the journey from seed to cup: planting, picking, drying, roasting. You’ll see how farmers care for their plants, smell new roasts, taste fresh brews and understand why Matagalpa’s coffee has earned respect. For us, sipping that brew after walking among the plantations makes every sip feel meaningful. It’s not just caffeine. It’s the land and people in a cup.
4. El Castillo del Cacao
One of the sweetest stops is El Castillo del Cacao, just outside Matagalpa. It’s a small chocolate factory where you can see the entire process. Take a tour of this charming chocolate factory to learn how raw cacao beans are transformed into rich, creamy bars. You’ll see every step of the process, from roasting to molding, and of course there’s plenty to taste. It’s an experience that’s as educational as it is delicious.
The building looks like a small castle, and the gardens around are fragrant with cacao trees. For us, walking through the cacao groves and trying raw vs roasted chocolate was a delicious lesson in place and flavor.

5. Cascada Blanca
One of Matagalpa’s most magical spots is Cascada Blanca, a beautifull waterfall tucked into the green hills. You can swim in the cool pool beneath it, walk behind the curtain of water, or simply sit on the rocks and let the sound wash over you. For us, it’s the perfect spot to recharge surrounded by jungle, mist, and peace. Bring your swimsuit, towel, and sense of wonder.
6.Coffee Museum
In town, the Coffee Museum is a must for understanding Matagalpa’s soul. You’ll find vintage tools, historical photos, explanations of processing methods, and context for how coffee shaped the region economically and socially. The museum ties together what you see in the fields with the story behind every cup. It’s the perfect complement to your coffee tour and gives you a real appreciation for the people behind every bean. For us, walking through those exhibits deepened our appreciation for every plantation visit we did later.

7. San Pedro Cathedral
At the center of the city stands the San Pedro Cathedral, an elegant symbol of Matagalpa’s history. Inside, its calm halls, wooden altars, and soft light make you slow down. Outside, the plaza around it hums with daily life: children, friendships, street vendors selling local treats. It’s a place where locals gather, and where you can feel a city breathe. Visit it in morning light or dusk the atmosphere shifts subtly, and you see the city in its many moods. It’s one of those places that makes you feel part of the rhythm of the city.
8. El Calvario viewpoint
El Calvario is not just a viewpoint, it’s a quiet pilgrimage up steps that many locals climb. Reaching the top gives you a beautiful view valleys, rooftops, mountains. It’s especially stunning at sunset, when the sky turns pink and gold and the city lights begin to twinkle. Bring a coffee, ofcourse, and sit for a while it’s a view that makes you fall for Matagalpa all over again. It’s a sweet reminder that travel isn’t always about new places, but seeing old ones from a new angle.

9. Cascada de la Luna
A bit further out lies Cascada de la Luna, one of Matagalpa’s lesser-known gems. Three waterfalls plunge side by side, creating a misty, magical scene. Hiking through the forest to reach them, crossing little streams, feeling the humidity then arriving to step under those falling streams was one of our favorite nature moments. It’s a bit more remote, but that’s what makes it special a place where nature still feels untouched.
10. Cerro Apante Reserve
If you love hiking and wildlife, the Cerro Apante Reserve is a dream. The Cerro Apante Reserve sits just southeast of the city and is home to countless bird species, orchids, and butterflies. Trails wind through lush forest to the Cruz de la Paz (Cross of Peace) at the summit a viewpoint that rewards you with sweeping views of Matagalpa and the surrounding mountains. We hiked early morning, as mist cleared and birds came alive. For nature lovers, Apante is a must-visit embrace of highland wilderness.

11. El Arenal Reserve
A bit wilder and less visited is the El Arenal Reserve. Here, you can hike through dense forests, spot exotic birds, and listen to the sounds of untouched nature. It’s an ideal spot for those who want to get off the beaten path and connect deeply with the land. We spent a half day there, following trails past coffee farms and into lush greenery, listening to water trickle, insects hum, and leaves whisper. It’s less traveled but no less rewarding.
12. Black pottery workshop
One of our favorite cultural stops was visiting a black pottery workshop. Local artisans shaped dark clay, polished it, and fired it in smoky kilns producing pots, bowls, sculptures with a deep black sheen. The artisans use age-old techniques passed down through generations. Watching them shape and polish each piece is amazing to watch and you can even try your hand at making your own. It’s a hands-on way to connect with Nicaragua’s creative heart
