Juan Venado Island is a stunning natural reserve off the coast of León, Nicaragua home to rich mangrove forests, diverse wildlife, and unspoiled beaches. It’s a paradise for eco-adventures: enjoy kayaking through peaceful canals, bird watching, fishing, swimming, and even camping under the stars. One of the most unforgettable experiences is releasing baby turtles during hatching season. The island stretches over 22 kilometers and shelters over 100 bird species, making it a vital ecosystem and a must-visit for nature lovers.

Itinerary Mangrove Island Tour

Your adventure begins with a hostel pickup, followed by a 25-minute drive to the coast. After a short introduction to the Sutiaba community and its rich Indigenous and cultural heritage, we’ll cover entrance fees and hop aboard a boat for an 8 km journey through serene mangroves. Keep your eyes open for crocodiles, exotic birds, and other wildlife. We’ll pause for a refreshing swim, and if it’s turtle season, take part in a heartwarming release. Camping can be arranged with prior notice. The day wraps up back in León with a delicious traditional meal.
