Nicaragua’s Most Stunning Waterfalls
While our smoking volcanoes often take the spotlight, Nicaragua is home to a hidden world of magnificent waterfalls tucked away in misty cloud forests and tropical jungles. These natural sanctuaries offer a refreshing escape and a chance to see the wilder side of the country. We believe every itinerary should include a stop at these serene spots to experience the true diversity of our landscape.

1. Cascada Blanca
Located near Matagalpa, Cascada Blanca is approximately 17 meters high and is one of the most accessible natural wonders in the north. You can drive and park right at the Eco-Lodge, making it a very easy visit for all ages. There is a small entrance fee of about $3 to $5 USD which grants you access to the trails and the famous cave located directly behind the falling curtain of water. After exploring the cave and swimming in the wide pool, you can enjoy a meal or a drink at the lodge overlooking the falls.
2. Cascada de la Luna
Also situated in the highlands of Matagalpa, Cascada de la Luna features a series of drops with the main fall reaching 40-60 meters. This spot is perfect for those seeking activity, as you can go swimming, kayaking, or take a thrilling zipline ride directly over the water. The entrance is free. The zipline and other activities will cost between $2 to $5 USD. Access is convenient as you can drive to the lodge and reach the base of the falls via a ten-minute walk or by ziplining down. After watching this amazing waterfall you can go for a drink at the lodge.

3. San Ramon
On the southern slopes of the Maderas Volcano on Ometepe Island, the San Ramón waterfall towers at nearly 64 meters high. Reaching this thin, misty cascade requires a dedicated hike through primary rainforest where you are likely to encounter howler monkeys and diverse birdlife. There is an entrance fee of roughly $3 USD collected at the biological station. While those with a 4×4 or ATV can drive to a higher parking area to shorten the trip, most visitors should prepare for a two to four-hour round-trip hike over uneven and often muddy terrain.
4. Salto de la Estanzuela
Located just a short drive from the city of Estelí, Salto de la Estanzuela drops about 35 meters into a wide, rocky pool perfect for swimming. This is a very popular spot for locals on the weekends, and the entrance fee is minimal, usually around $1 or $2 USD. You can drive most of the way and take a light, five-minute walk from the parking area to the water. It is a great choice for a quick nature break while exploring the northern revolutionary history and cigar factories of the region.

5. Cascada de Arcoiris
Deep within the Peñas Blancas Massif, the Arcoiris (Rainbow) waterfall is a spectacular 45-meter drop that requires a true adventurer’s spirit. To reach it, you need to book your hike with local guides as the hike is very challenging. The hike is a two-to-three-hour climb through steep cloud forest where the path is often made of slick roots and moss. Because the trails here are dense and the weather can change quickly, we always recommend walking with a guide who knows the massif intimately.
6. Somoto Canyon Falls
While Somoto is famous for the canyon itself, it houses several small but powerful waterfalls and jump-offs that vary between 2 and 10 meters. Accessing these falls is only possible as part of a canyoning tour. There are several Canyon tours to choose from varying in a 2 hour, 4 hour or 6 hour journey. The tour exists of hiking, swimming, and floating through the ancient rock walls. It is a full experience that combines geology with pure fun.
