Hola! I’m Margreet, and together with Leonel I run Mono Loco Adventures. León has stolen both our hearts quite literally. Every adventure I’m about to share, we’ve experienced ourselves. Some were thrilling, some cultural, some deeply romantic. I first met Leonel during a tour here in León, and from that moment our love story began. Now, we get to share that love for Nicaragua with you.
Here are the top things to do in León not just as a tourist list, but through our eyes and experiences.

1. The Original Free Walking Tour
The Original Free Walking Tour will always be my favorite memory, because it’s where I first met Leonel, my tour guide at the time. That day, I didn’t just discover León, I also discovered the man who would later become my partner in life and adventures. The tour itself lasts around 2–3 hours, and it’s the perfect introduction to León’s history, street art, politics, and daily life. We wandered past colonial buildings, vibrant markets, and murals that told the story of Nicaragua’s struggles and triumphs. Leonel explained everything with so much passion that I instantly felt connected not just to the city, but to him. The tour is technically free, though tipping is encouraged. Most people tip between the 10 and 20 dollars. The Original Free Walking Tour it’s one of the best ways to get to know León through local eyes. Who knows? Maybe you’ll also meet someone who changes your life.
2. Volcano Boarding at Cerro Negro
Volcano boarding at Cerro Negro is pure adrenaline. At 728 meters, it’s Nicaragua’s youngest and most active volcano, last erupting in 1999. Hiking up takes about one hour, and though it’s steep and dusty, the view from the top is incredible. Black lava fields stretch endlessly, with other volcanoes dotting the horizon. But the real thrill comes when you put on your protective suit, goggles, and grab a wooden board. Sliding down the steep gravel slope feels wild some riders even hit 80 km/h! I laughed the whole way down, covered in volcanic dust from head to toe. It’s messy, fast, and unforgettable. My tip? Wear clothes you don’t mind ruining and don’t forget to smile for the camera the photos are hilarious. This is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure you can only do here in León. I have slided down this volcano 3 times now. Such an adrenaline rush!

3. Sunset on Top of the Cathedral
The Cathedral of León, officially the Basilica of the Assumption, is the largest cathedral in Central America and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The first time I went up to the rooftop, I was blown away. Walking barefoot across the smooth white domes feels almost like stepping into a dream. From the top, you can see the chain of volcanoes stretching across the horizon El Hoyo, Cerro Negro, San Christobal, Telica, Momotombo all watching over León. The best time is to go at sunset, when the city glows in golden light and the sky turns pink and purple. It’s breathtakingly romantic and one of my favorite moments we share again and again. Entrance costs just 3 dollars, but the experience is priceless. Don’t forget your camera, because the photos from up there are stunning. For me, this is León’s most magical and peaceful spot. And I still go up the rooftop once in a while. It stays magical.
4. Telica Sunset Hike
Hiking Telica Volcano is an adventure that will stay with you forever. At 1,061 meters, Telica is one of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes. When you go with a tour the bus/car takes you up and from the parkinglot it is one more hour to hike up. The trail all the way from the bottom usually takes about 3–4 hours one way, and while it’s challenging, the reward is unbelievable. When Leonel and I reached the top, we stood at the rim of a massive smoking crater, peering into the earth’s fiery heart. We timed our hike for sunset, and as the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky turned into a painting of orange, pink, and purple. Watching it all while listening to the volcano’s deep rumbles gave me goosebumps. The hike back down happens under a starry night sky with headlamps, which adds to the adventure. It’s raw, wild, and unforgettable one of León’s ultimate experiences.

5. Camping at El Hoyo
Camping at El Hoyo Volcano was one of the most unique camp trips of my life. At 1,088 meters, El Hoyo is known for the massive hole in its side, created by a landslide centuries ago. The hike to the top takes about 4–5 hours, and it’s not easy, but once you arrive, the view makes every step worth it. Especially the first hour is pretty steep to walk up. From our tent, we could see the silhouettes of volcanoes and the sparkling lights of León below. Waking up to sunrise above the clouds was magical. We cooked simple camp food while we sat by the fire, and it felt like the world stood still. For adventurous souls, this overnight trek is an absolute must.
6. Art Museum
The Museo de Arte Fundación Ortiz-Gurdián is one of the best art museums in Central America, and it was a surprise to me how impressive it really is. Housed in two beautiful colonial mansions, the museum features everything from European masters like Mondriaan, Rubens and Picasso to incredible Nicaraguan and Latin American artists. I wandered the halls for hours, soaking in both the art and the peaceful courtyards. For just a few dollars, you get access to world-class collections and a quiet escape from León’s heat. It’s perfect for art lovers, but also for anyone curious about Nicaragua’s cultural side. And everythime I go back they have new pieces in the gallery.

7. Revolution Museum
The Museo de la Revolución is raw, emotional, and unforgettable. Housed in a crumbling old building once used by revolutionaries, the museum is guided by former Sandinista fighters who lived through the revolution themselves. Walking through the rooms, hearing their personal stories, and seeing faded photographs made me feel the weight of Nicaragua’s history in a very real way. From the rooftop, you get sweeping views over León, but the most powerful part is the human connection. It’s a must-do if you want to understand the history of Nicaragua.
8. Museum of Myths and Legends
This quirky museum is located in a former prison, which already gives it a mysterious vibe. Inside, you’ll find colorful, sometimes creepy life-sized figures depicting Nicaragua’s traditional myths and legends. From La Llorona to El Cadejo, each story reflects the country’s folklore and imagination. When I visited, I couldn’t help but feel both entertained and slightly spooked. It’s a fun and unusual way to dive into local culture, and the guides bring the legends to life with passion.

9. Street Art Tour
León’s streets are alive with murals and graffiti, telling stories of revolution, social struggles, and community pride. I joined Leonel’s Street Art Tour and was amazed at how much meaning hides behind each wall. The colors, the symbolism, the history it’s not just art, it’s the voice of the people. Walking through these murals with Leonel was like reading the city’s diary. This is one of the best ways to connect with the spirit of León.
10. Rubén Darío Museum
The Rubén Darío Museum celebrates Nicaragua’s most famous poet, known as the father of modern Spanish literature. Located in his childhood home, the museum showcases his belongings, letters, and manuscripts. As someone who loves words, I found it incredibly inspiring. Leonel and I walked through the rooms imagining the life of a man who changed literature forever. It’s quiet, reflective, and deeply cultural a must for anyone who loves poetry or history.

11. Salsa Night at La Fábrica
Every Thursday night, La Fábrica turns into the hottest dance floor in León. Salsa and bachata fill the air, and both locals and travelers join in. The first time I went there, I was completely hooked. I didn’t know all the steps, but it didn’t matter the energy is contagious, and everyone’s there to have fun. The best salsa dancers of Leon are showing their skills at salsa night. It’s one of the best ways to meet people and dive into Nicaragua’s vibrant nightlife. And afterwards you definitely want to take some salsa lessons. I took lessons at Ritmo Salsero, one of the best salsa schools in Nicaragua.
12. Beach Time at Las Peñitas
Just 30 minutes from León, Las Peñitas Beach is the perfect place to escape the city heat. With long stretches of sand, great surf waves, and cozy beach bars, it’s a slice of paradise. You can take the chickenbus for just a under a dollar. Or you can take a taxi for 10 dollars. I love to spend afternoons here, watching the sun set over the Pacific with a cold drink in my hand. You can stay at SUA, Simple Beach, Playa Rocka or Mano-a-Mano. You can also try surfing, go horseback riding, or just relax. It’s laid-back, beautiful, and one of my favorite spots near León.

13. Mangrove Tour – Juan Venado Island
The Juan Venado Island Natural Reserve is a hidden gem just off the coast. We joined a small boat tour through the mangroves, spotting crocodiles, iguanas, and hundreds of birds. During turtle season, you can even see baby turtles making their way to the ocean one of the most magical things I’ve ever witnessed. The reserve feels untouched and peaceful, and it’s the perfect contrast to the energy of León. There are also kayak tours into the mangrove. Or you can go for a fishing trip, catch your own fresh fish and cook it on the shore. So yummy!
14. Mercado Central
For a taste of local life, nothing beats Mercado Central. It’s busy, noisy, colorful, and full of energy. Stalls sell everything from fresh fruit and tortillas to clothes and souvenirs. Leonel guided me through the chaos, showing me his favorite spots to grab carne en baho and fresh juices. It’s the best way to experience León like a local.

15. El Fortín de Acosasco
This old fortress sits on a hill overlooking León and offers sweeping views of the city and surrounding volcanoes. The fort itself has a dark history, used during times of conflict and revolution. Walking through the empty halls gave me chills, but standing on the rooftop watching the sunset was unforgettable. It’s a mix of history, tragedy, and beauty all in one.
16. Nightife in Leon
León has a vibrant nightlife and my favorite spot to go by sunset is El Mirador. The is the only rooftop terrace in the city. With loud music it is not the best place for a talk but the energy and the view is amazing. Afterwards you can go to ViaVia and El Bodegón. Both host live bands on the weekens and the atmosphere is always amazing. I love sipping a mojito or a Tona while enjoying the live music. it’s the perfect way to end a day full of adventure. And when you are in the mood and you want to go dancing through the night, than you need to go to 23Bar. The first time you go there you will be amazed!

Final Thoughts
From volcano boarding to salsa dancing, art museums to beach sunsets, León truly has it all.
