Hola! I’m Margreet, and together with Leonel I run Mono Loco Adventures. In this blog we want to share our favorite things to do in San Juan Del Sur.
There’s a certain magic about San Juan del Sur. Maybe it’s the curve of the bay framed by hills, the colorful murals splashed across town, or the way the sunsets turn the sky into gold every evening. This is Nicaragua’s most famous beach town and for good reason. Here, life slows down just enough for you to soak in the vibes, yet adventure is always around the corner. From surf breaks to hidden beaches, from zip-lining in the jungle to pool parties that last all night San Juan del Sur has something for every kind of traveler.
If you’re planning your trip, here’s how to make the most of it.

1. Mirador del Cristo de la Misericordia
One of the first things you’ll notice as you stroll along the bay is the silhouette of Cristo de la Misericordia perched high above the town. The hike (or drive) up to this viewpoint is well worth the effort: panoramic views of the bay, the town’s rooftops, and the curve of the coastline greet you from above. On clear days, you’ll see rolling waves beyond, and at golden hour, the light plays across the water in soft hues. It’s a gentle introduction to San Juan del Sur’s beauty and a reminder to look up as much as you look out.
2. Beach hopping
Each beach around San Juan del Sur has its own vibe. Playa Hermosa is a long stretch of golden sand where you can spend hours swimming or relaxing under a palm hut. Playa Remanso is ideal if you want a serene escape just a short drive from town, great for a low-key afternoon with just the sound of the waves. Then there’s Playa Maderas, the heart of the surf scene. With consistent waves, it’s a favorite for both beginners and seasoned surfers alike. You’ll find surf schools dotting the sand, boards available to rent, and a vibrant beach atmosphere. Close to town, Playa Marsella offers a quieter alternative to its more famous neighbors. The beach is ideal for afternoon walks, quiet dips, or catching the sunset without the crowds. If you like discovering quieter spots, head to Playa El Yankee and Playa Escameca. These are often less crowded than the main tourist beaches, giving you space to breathe, swim, or nap in peace. No matter your mood, there’s a beach to match it.

3. Surfing & waves
You can’t come to San Juan del Sur without trying surfing. Even if you’ve never stood on a board before, local instructors will have you riding waves in no time. Experienced surfers will find plenty of consistent breaks to test their skills, especially at Maderas. Surfing here isn’t just about the sport, it’s about connecting with the ocean, feeling the power of the Pacific, and laughing at every wipeout. Trust us, it’s part of the experience.
4. Horsebackriding on the beach
Few things feel more cinematic than riding horseback along a Nicaraguan beach at sunset. Horseback riding in SJDS lets you see the coastline through a different lens. With local guides, you’ll go through jungle trails before reaching wide-open sand where the only music is the sound of the ocean. It’s a slower, more grounded way to explore the landscape, and an unforgettable memory for couples, families, or anyone who wants to see the coast from a new perspective.

5. Catamaran and whalewatching tours
San Juan del Sur’s ocean has secrets worth exploring. Hop aboard a catamaran tour for a day at sea: snorkeling, private beach stops, sunset sails, and plenty of photo ops. For a seasonal treat (typically December–April and August–October), whale-watching tours let you glimpse migrating humpbacks, plus dolphins that frequent these waters year-round. If your timing is right, you may witness breaching whales or pods of playful dolphins. Sea tours remind you just how alive these waters are, full of movement, mystery, and marine life. These are the moments you’ll remember forever.
6. ATV Tours
If you’re itching for some adrenaline, grab an ATV and hit the trails. These off-road adventures take you through the rugged hills surrounding San Juan del Sur, past farms, villages, and incredible viewpoints of the coastline. Expect dust, mud, and a big dose of excitement. Many tours also include stops at hidden beaches where you can cool off with a swim before roaring back onto the trail. It’s one of the best ways to see SJDS’s wilder side.

7. Ziplining at Aventura Las Nubes
For a bird’s-eye view of San Juan del Sur, head to Aventura Las Nubes, an adventure park just outside town. Here, you’ll zipline through lush forest canopy with sweeping views of the Pacific and the rolling hills inland. The course includes multiple platforms, suspension bridges, and thrilling rides across ravines. It’s an activity that combines adrenaline with breathtaking scenery, perfect for travelers of all ages.
8. Fishing Tours
The Pacific waters off San Juan del Sur are rich with marine life, making it a fantastic spot for a fishing charter. Local captains know the best places to find snapper, tuna, and even marlin. Tours usually leave early in the morning, so you’ll catch the sunrise as you head out to sea. The best part? Many trips include cooking your catch right on the beach, turning your effort into a fresh, unforgettable meal.

9. La Flor Beach Natural Reserve
Just 20 kilometers south of San Juan del Sur lies La Flor Beach Natural Reserve, one of Nicaragua’s most important turtle nesting sites. Between July and January, thousands of olive ridley turtles come ashore to lay their eggs during a natural event called an “arribada.” If you’re lucky, you might also see baby turtles making their way to the ocean. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife experience and a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting these fragile ecosystems.
10. Sunday Funday backpackers paradise
Ask any backpacker about San Juan del Sur, and they’ll mention Sunday Funday. It’s a day-long party that hops from pool to pool, with music, dancing, and travelers from all over the world. Even if partying isn’t usually your thing, experiencing it once is almost a rite of passage here. It’s the town at its most social, buzzing with energy, laughter, and connections.
